asprey jacques are pleased to announce the first U.K. solo show of work by Berlin-based artist Antje Majewski. In recent years, Majewski has gained wide recognition for her highly realistic paintings of people and places she has observed and photographed.

For her show in London, Majewski will exhibit the first part of a new series, Invitation to a Voyage. The series takes its title from a panoramic painting by the American Realist painter Sylvia Sleigh (1983) which in turn refers to the French artist WatteauÕs masterpiece Embarkation to Kythera (1777). The first part of the series to be exhibited at asprey jacques, Friends and Lovers, consists of four works on canvas. In the front space, three paintings depict young couples while in the glass domed space of the gallery there will be a large scale panorama called Picnic. The reference to art history is emphasized by the colours that Majewski has decided to paint the two rooms of the gallery, which recall the mood of 19th century picture galleries.

Born in 1968, Majewski studied history of art. Solo shows include neugerriemschneider, Berlin (1999) and Kunstverein Lingen (1998). Significant group exhibitions include Nach-Bild, Kunsthalle Basel; Made in Berlin, Rethymnon Centre for Contemporary Art, Crete (1998); and Campo 5 curated by Francesco Bonami, Venice Biennale (1995). Her large triptych Die Bergsteiger was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco earlier this year.
