Paul Morrison is internationally reknowned for his paintings and site-specific wall paintings of highly stylised black and white landscapes. His works combine graphically and botanically exact renditions with cartoonish features of flora: ferns, waterlilies, dandelions, wood grain vary in flatness, intricate detail and scale.
This is primarily an artist's book, largely image-based, which Paul Morrison developed over a period of 18 months. Beginning with photographs which convey his creative process, the book is conceived in such a way as to devote a double page spread to each reproduction: acrylic on canvas paintings from Fence to Auxin, and wall paintings from Ley (ICA, 1998) to Premonition (Tokyo, 2001).
Born in 1966, Paul Morrison graduated from Goldsmiths in 1998 and has exhibited on an international level: The Drawing Center, New York; UCLA Hammer Museum of Art, Los Angeles; Aspen Art Museum, Colorado; Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Basel and most recently at the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, Milan.
Chloroplast is Paul Morrison's forthcoming solo show at Southampton City Art Gallery
(8 February-14 April 2002) which will tour to Nürnberg Kunsthalle (8 May-30 June 2002) and is accompanied by a catalogue.
